Copy of letter to Mr. Peter Hodgson
|
Thank you for your letter of November 21, which we found as a fax from Cambridge
on our return to Toronto. And thank you, as well, for asking the Government of
Grenada and/or the developer to contact us with further information. Did you send
them a copy of our letter to Mister Sharp? We believe it is important that all parties understand
how seriously BirdLife International is taking this matter.
When you explain that Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts is involved in a project at
Mount Hartman Estate in Grenada, we assume that you are investing in the project, but
are otherwise not involved. It seems clear, nevertheless, that your investment would
inescapably have contributed to any damage done to the critically endangered Grenada
dove, should that lamentable possibility occur. In such a case Four Seasons Hotels and
Resorts would have to be held responsible, to a greater or lesser extent, along with the
developer and the Government of Grenada. To say that Four Seasons is not responsible
because it isn’t involved in any planning way, but has only provided a certain amount of
the necessary investment, isn’t persuasive. You will know better than we what a precarious
position that would be to take, especially since BirdLife International has alerted you to
the potential damage that might be done to a critically endangered species.
We would be grateful if you would tell us who you forwarded Dr Rand’s letter to, so that
we can raise our concerns with them directly.
We look forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely,
Margaret Atwood Graeme Gibson,
Joint Presidents, the Rare Bird Club
