There is increasing concern over the proposed Four Seasons Hotel
development at Mount Hartman National Park in Grenada. The concern is being
expressed by broad constituency of scientists, conservationists, nature
tour companies and others and I am sure you will have noticed mention in
the press.
I am aware that Four Seasons is linked to this development through a
pre-contract as eventual operator of the resort.We are aware that you are
neither the owner or the developer. However, by association and as the
Operator you will be endorsing actions that could lead to the sale of a
legally designated National Park and the development that will severely
impact a Critically Endangered species – the national bird of Grenada.
Such actions are in conflict with the guidelines and ethos of the
International Hotels Environment Initiative (now part of Tourism
Partnership in Prince Charles’ International Business Leaders Forum) which
Four Seasons is rightly part of. The Environmental Assessment commissioned
by the Government of Grenada is wholly inadequate and does not meet World
Bank guidelines supplied to the government for this specific development.
On behalf of the Global BirdLife Partnership I would be glad to establish a
dialogue with Four Seasons over this issue. Four Seasons is in a unique
position to be proactive in pushing for environmental rigor, and we would
be happy to assist you in achieving this.
